People have a general perception of IITians being nerds and always being locked away in their tiny rooms at any given moment . But , perceptions can change very quickly once a person visits Mood indigo . What I saw had me astounded. Never had I imagined it to be on this scale . But as I said , things do change pretty quickly .
IIT-B Mood Indigo ...
For the non-IITians reading this article, you may find a twist in the tale . But for the IIT-B crowd , it was always known to us . During the first all team meet of MI , we (freshies...) were briefed on the working of MI . Another important factor emphasized to us was the " HHB " factor ( My fellow IITians , you are surely aware of this). Also to be noted , things did turn out to be as we had anticipated . The stark ratio of 1:10 did transform to a IITian-friendly 1:1 ( now you might have got it !!! ) .
Getting back to the point , Mood indigo was an eye-opener for all the first-year students of IIT-B ( The so-called "organizers" .. but should be renamed as "workers" or "labourers" ) . But nonetheless , fun can be found in all things , even the most "clichéd" of things. The ways to enjoy the most boring of things can be quite a task but we certainly did it . My job was in the Informals department of MI . The events , I was a part of were Treasure hunt , Clash of the Titans ( a highly underrated event .. but can have a bigger role in the future ) and MI records . These were my primary tasks , not to forget the "infi" amount of worthless things we did ( frisking .. for example ).
Organizers or Commodities ??
During the zeroth day of MI ( one day before the event starts ) , I came across this fact . My CG ( the third-year senior who headed my department of MI ) was talking to his counterpart of another department . The facts I overheard , overwhelmed me . It was not as if I had heard it for the first time , but to hear it live was rather amusing . One of the CG's was short of "bacchhes" and wanted the other one to "supply" him some . Were they child traffickers ? No , they were just some CG's of MI . But , it isn't their fault . Infact , Is it a mistake after all ? I mean , first year students are supposed to volunteer for their college festival . If they do not show any "enthu" , it is obvious that there will be a short supply of volunteers . I also believe that the name "organizers" given to the volunteers was proposed to make the reluctant freshies to participate. But , this unfortunate lack of participation is only to continue as parents do not send their kids during winter vacation to the campus for organizing stuff. Only the localites prefer to stay in the campus and organize things . But , inspite of this , I found many exceptions to this rule . More non-Mumbai organizers were present than the Mumbai ones. Things do not go as I think they do !!!
In the next part I will expand on my experiences ...
MI DIARIES – ORGANISERS-2011!!!
ReplyDeleteTill November, we had imbibed ourselves in the colour of IIT-Bombay, the most prestigious engineering institute of India. And, now was a time for us to wait at our native place for the start of Mood Indigo-20 11, ASIA’S BIGGEST CULTURAL EVENT AT COLLEGE LEVEL (as they say it!) from December 18 to 21.
Most of us arrived at Bombay on 16 December for the preparation of Mood I. We had a lot of expectations from this festival as our seniors had given us a preview of the festival and also, as we were involved in its activity for the first semester. And what to say, it really came up to our expectations!! Everything in the institute was changed and for the better. The coordinators and Core Group Member did not leave any stone unturned for the event’s planning and the time for execution was drawing nearer. And they required workforce for it, which to say had arrived from all the corners of India, in the form of us, the freshies, the organisers, or as per their view, labourers.
Unaware of this fact, we went to our seniors and they had prepared themselves for us. As soon as, I reached some known faces of the institute, my hardship times had started for the next six days.
But was it begaar, no, definitely not. There were many incentives to it. At the end of a day’s hard work, if you get to have pizzas, burgers, cold drinks, doughnuts, biryani, and what not, then it,s not begaar. Actually, it turned out to be fun.
Interacting with the coolest of our seniors, learning life fundae with them, throwing fattes with them, making new friends, MI was all about this for us. As guaranteed by our seniors, those 4 days were the best of our life, and working for Mood I became our ardent desire after those 4 days.
On Day minus one, that is on the 16 of December, we were given our orgie cards and food coupons. But, just a parantha, that was a real fart. Don’t know, which force helped us kept going at that time, but we did a lot of work on Day Zero. But, as I said, our incentives were fulfilled and we were the ones for whom, Subway Sandwiches and Coca Cola became the most hated things.
On Day One, we realised, what Mood I was all about and why was it Asia’s largest cultural festival. Oh my God! What a crowd was that. Artists from all over India were gathered to show their skills. We never saw the institute this lively. The g:b ratio shot up to 1:1. Wow!!!
For the next four days, we did not get a chance to sleep. Infinite work, infinite fatte, infinite khaana and infinite masti. We enjoyed every moment of Mood I. Be it intro(would avoid the r- word) by the seniors, doing photoshop for the coming event, carrying mattresses, attending judges or anchoring an event, enjoyment was guaranteed in everything.
But on 21 December night, when we bid adieu to Mood Indigo -2011 with the National Anthem, we realised what had ended. Institute had again lost its charm. But, the cycle has to go on and we will wait till it takes . A wait of one year.
